Osamu Tezuka
Osamu Tezuka was born on November 3, 1928 in Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture. He graduated from the Department of Medicine, Osaka University with a doctor of medicine degree. He made his manga debut in 1946 with Ma-chan no Nikkicho (Diary of Ma-chan), and achieved great success with Shin Takarajima (New Treasure Island) in 1947. He had since made a tremendous contribution to the establishment of the genre of Japanese story manga, while leaving a huge mark on the world of animation productions. His major works include Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy), Ribon no Kishi (Princess Knight), Hinotori (Phoenix), Black Jack and Mitsume ga Toru (The Three-Eyed One). He died in 1989.
Shotaro Ishinomori
Real name: Shotaro Onodera Shotaro Ishinomori was born on January 25, 1938 in Tome-gun (present-day Tome City), Miyagi Prefecture. In 1954, he made his debut in the world of manga with Nikyu Tenshi (Second-class Angel) when he was a high school student. Upon graduating from high school, he went to Tokyo where he started his career as a manga artist. Also known for Kamen Rider (Masked Rider), a live-action TV series using special effects and a manga series which he created in parallel, he developed a new genre in mixed-media production. His major works include Cyborg 009, Kamen Rider (Masked Rider), Sabu to Ichi Torimonohikae (Sabu and Ichi), and Manga Nihon no Rekishi (Japanese History in Manga). He died in 1998.
