Discover! Kurayashiki Warehouse-Residences of
Daimyo Feudal Lords
―“Kitchen of the Nation” Attracting Rice, Merchandise and People
In the Edo period, feudal domains in various parts of Japan rushed to build warehouse-residences called kurayashiki in Osaka. The number of kurayashiki exceeded 130 at the peak. Most of them were located in the Nakanoshima and Dojima area where rivers provided excellent transportation routes. From kurayashiki, feudal retainers worked with Osaka merchants to distribute tribute rice and local specialties. This exhibition sheds light on kurayashiki, which played an important role in the finances of feudal domains and served as venues for cultural exchanges, by showcasing pictures and old documents as well as new discoveries.

Kawase Hasui
―Travel and Nostalgic Landscape
Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was a woodblock print artist who traveled all over Japan from the Taisho to Showa periods when townscapes and landscapes were rapidly changing due to modernization. He is known for artworks depicting landscapes in which ordinary people lived. Working in collaboration with his publisher, Watanabe Shozaburo, Hasui led the “Shin-hanga” movement to promote woodblock prints for the new era and gained popularity. This exhibition introduces the life of Hasui as an artist, who was also called a “poet with the spirit of a traveler,” along with about 180 of his representative works.
