The Legacy of 1,000 Years of Japanese Swords
– Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the All Japan Swordsmith Association
The beautiful shape of the Japanese sword with ridgelines (shinogi) and curvature is thought to have been perfected in the Heian period (794–1185). Since that time to the present day, Japanese swords have been continuously crafted for one thousand years, except for a few years during World War II. The thousand-year journey of Japanese swords has been made possible primarily by skilled swordsmiths throughout many historical eras. This exhibition will shed light on the fascinating world of Japanese swords which has been passed down for one thousand years, in celebration of this milestone 50th anniversary of the All Japan Swordsmith Association.
